Anticipatory Guidance

Anticipatory Guidance - What is it?

In general paediatrics, anticipatory guidance is a familiar and helpful part of the care process. If you've ever flipped through a “what to expect” book or chatted with your child’s paediatrician about developmental milestones—what your child is doing now and what might come next—you’ve experienced it firsthand. These conversations give parents a clearer picture of the physical, emotional, and developmental changes their child might go through between visits. They also help build trust between parents and providers, and they give families a foundation for setting goals and feeling supported in their parenting journey.

The main goal of anticipatory guidance is to support the child’s well-being. But there's another important benefit: it helps parents feel more confident in their decisions and more secure in the idea that they’re doing the best they can for their child. It’s no surprise that research shows parents feel more satisfied with their healthcare experience when this kind of guidance is part of it.

But here’s the hard truth—parents of medically complex kids often don’t get this kind of support. That could be because most paediatricians aren’t trained in the details of every rare disease or maybe it’s because offering anticipatory guidance in these cases means having some very tough conversations about outcomes that may not be what anyone hoped for.

Through my work at Courageous Parents Network (CPN), I’ve seen how powerful those difficult conversations can be. Families often tell us they feel more hopeful and more capable as parents when they’re given the chance to talk honestly about what might lie ahead. I think that’s because anticipatory guidance helps ease the constant uncertainty that is part of life with a medically complex child. Even when the future is uncertain or painful, having a clearer sense of it helps parents feel more prepared—and that can make all the difference.

A core part of CPN’s mission is to teach parents about anticipatory guidance—what it means, when it's helpful, and how to ask for it. We empower families by providing resources that prepare them for what’s ahead as they love and care for their child. Our guides offer practical, emotionally attuned advice on every aspect of the journey, from nurturing spirituality to supporting siblings and maintaining partnerships.

Our video library features insights from other parents who’ve navigated care decisions, as well as clinicians sharing their approach to care. Our blog amplifies the voices of families who offer hard-earned wisdom to help others find their way. For caregivers of children with severe neurological impairments such as Batten disease, NeuroJourney provides tailored anticipatory guidance—addressing both medical and emotional dimensions of care.

These resources help position parents as experts in their own child’s needs and experiences. They create a foundation for meaningful conversations with medical teams about care goals, possible futures, and decision-making. While anticipatory guidance can't erase fear or uncertainty, it equips parents with the clarity and confidence to face both current crises and future challenges with greater preparedness.
