New Study Finds 'Intriguing Link' in Batten Synapse Dysfunction
20 July 2022
Researchers in the US have reported a potential new role for three Batten proteins in the maintenance and function of synapses - the essential structures through which neurons 'talk' to each other. The study entitled “Transmembrane Batten Disease Proteins Interact With a Shared Network of Vesicle Sorting Proteins, Impacting Their Synaptic Enrichment” reveals that Batten-disease causing mutations in the transmembrane proteins CLN3, CLN6 and CLN8 are associated with loss and dysregulation of other essential proteins required for normal synapse function.
